Your customers are the lifeblood of your business. How much do you really know about your customers? Maybe not as much as you want.
Magento can offer a good amount of information about your customers to help you better understand your customer base. This is an overview of what Magento offers for customer functionality.

Customers:

In Magento 2 you can view customers just like products and orders and actually add columns, change your default view, export to a CSV or perform multiple actions such as delete a customer or assign to a customer group. You can also manually add customers if you want to take orders over the phone.

When you click into each customer, you can view their basic information in the customer view and click on the left tabs to see more information. There is a lot of information you can see such as basic Account Information, Addresses, Orders, Returns, Wishlist, Newsletter, Store Credit, Gift Registry, Product Reviews, Billing Agreements, and Reward Points. Each has its own tab so you can view that information individually.
You can also perform manual actions such as deleting the customer, reset their password, creating an order and managing their shopping cart. All in all, Magento customer functionality is very powerful compared to almost every other eCommerce platform.

Now Online

Just like you would expect, this shows you customers online now. This can be useful to see how many concurrent customers you might have and how much that can affect the bandwidth of your website.

Segments (Enterprise)

This is a very cool enterprise feature that can allow you to segment certain customers based on conditions like product history or sales total into specific segments. You could then apply special promotions, content, or other functionality to help improve the user experience of that customer segment.

Customer Groups

This is an extremely useful feature that can allow you to group your customers in order to better serve them. A simple example is wholesale versus retail customers. You may also have many levels of wholesale. This can be used to have different pricing tiers per customer group so that your customers get discounted pricing like they normally would offline.

Store => Attributes / Customer (Enterprise)

Here you can easily add attributes, edit attributes, and customize the data around customers. This is particularly useful if there is more information you want to know about a customer such as their job title, company affiliation, social media handles, or other types of information that might allow you to build a better eCommerce experience.
You can add an attribute similar to how you would add a product attribute in that there are many input types and ways to customize it to your liking.

Store => Attributes / Customer Address (Enterprise)

The customer address attributes are very similar to the general customer attributes but they apply specifically to the address of the customer. This might be useful if you need to know more information about an address such as is it a headquarters versus a franchise or other types of data that might better align with your eCommerce processes.
